Miss Chinese Vancouver/Toronto

I had a FOTD in plan, but this is more pressing and interesting:

Miss Chinese Vancouver and Miss Chinese Toronto Pageants!

I got our monthly local Chinese entertainment magazine in the mail today, and on the cover were two girls, and the caption said something about Miss Chinese Vancouver/Toronto beauty pageants. I've never paid any attention to these local Chinese pageants except for the year when the Miss Chinese Vancouver won Miss Chinese World. Anyway, I wasn't even aware this was going on, and I flipped open to see the winners this year.

My first reaction was: HOLY FUCKING SHIT! How fugly can these girls get? I mean, they looked at best mediorcre even with make-up on! I really don't know how they choose these girls, maybe it's because there aren't enough people who sign up in the first place? I mean seriously, I thought although beauty pageants are not completely about beauty, their appearance should be at least passable with the aid of make-up. Apparently, I was wrong. Maybe they chose the girls based on academic merit or intelligence, but upon reading the complete article, I was swamped in utter disapointment. These girls go to normal universities and their answers to public-speaking questions are short-sighted and pathetically answered. Seriously, even Miss Foreign Vietnamese or whatever third-world pageant had better answers!

But wait, it gets more pathetic! I think the person who styled these girls should go jump off a bridge. NOW. I don't know who the fuck dressed those girls, but their fashion style was... just plain shitty. SHITTY. They were trying to achieve North American fashion trends with fobby clothes and it just doesn't work. I mean, following North American trends is fine, some Chinese girls like it and they get North American clothes to achieve that style. Fobby styles are also nice, I dress like a fob (I am a fob), and I get clothes from China and Hong Kong to achieve my look. However, these girls had a weird melange of fobby clothes and North American style, so their stylists need to go murder themselves. Their make-up was okay for the most part, except a few of them looked like working prostitutes, which was pretty sad. However, I'm pleasantly surprised to say that their hair was flawless, thanks to their hair stylist which happens to be my hair stylist as well. I've been going to the same stylist for about four years now, and he started doing hair for Miss Chinese Vancouver pageant girls after I started going to him. More on my stylist when I get a haircut, which should be soon, depending on how soon I can get an appointment. My mom was lucky enough to get a special appointment today at their closing time because she urgently needed her hair done for tomorrow, when Xiu's family comes to visit. Anyway, I digress...

My point being: why the hell do we have Chinese pageants in Vancouver when no one really pays attention to it, and the winning girls are labelled "whores" and "sluts"? I know a few past winners who tried to make it in the show biz in Asia and it didn't really work out. Heck, I even heard people calling them dumb blondes with Asian faces! Vancouver and Toronto both have huge Chinese populations but everyones knows someone who knows a girl in these pageants so there are constantly news flying around regarding what past winners are doing etc. I'm sure we have girls in Vancouver who are both beautiful and intelligent, but they probably think these pageants are SO below them. And the funny thing I noticed about Chinese pageans in Vancouver is that the same girls compete in every pageant! When I read the biographies of the girls who competed in this year's Miss Chinese Vancouver/Toronton, they were girls who participated in Sunshine Nation, Crystal Cover Girl, and various other beauty pageants across Canada.

Verdict? These girls need to get a life. No matter how many Canadian Chinese pageants they participate in, they'll never make it to the show biz in China, or any part of Asia for that matter. China is overflowing with Chinese pageant winners from all over the world, and the Chinese show biz is over that phase of ABCs and CBCs. Not to mention that the judging system of these pageants are so corrupted that whoever donates the most gets to pick the winner. Psh.

However, I am proud that Miss China won Miss Universe a few weeks ago. I think her name was Zilin Zhang if I remember correctly. She wasn't the prettiest of the bunch, but I think she was graceful and confident. And her make-up and wardrobe choices didn't suck.

One of the girls I go to school with LOVES to compete in Teen Chinese pageants, and she's such a slut. I can't believe she moved in across the street from me! Her mom parks her gold Porsche and gold Mercedes on the street even though they have a three-car garage. Seriously, please name ONE Chinese kid in our school whose family doesn't own at least a Porsche, BMW, or Mercedes, and I don't see 1000 Porsches, BMWs, and Mercedes' all on the streets do I? This is what I hate about being labelled as "nouveau riche", because there are people who earn us the label by dressing their kids like whores (even when they wear Chloe and Miu Miu) and flaunting their wealth. Modesty, anyone?

I think I digressed, so since I already digressed, let me digress more! Today was the last day of school, I'm officially on winter break! Every class I went to involved either UNO or Mafia, and no more than 10 people in any given classroom in the whole school. So I though, what the fuck, I'll skip the last two periods since the classes are only 30 minutes long each, and no teacher was taking attendence. Nicole left after first period to go shopping Downtown. Before she went, she tried to extract what I wanted for Christmas and of course I didn't give any clues. So she opted for asking what I want the most from MAC since I dragged her into MAC last week. I said liquidlast, which I already have. I honestly don't know what she got me in the end. I guess I'll have to wait a few more days to find out!

So since I ditched class, my gf came over and we got take-out from Sapporo. To my surprise, Sapporo actually makes really decent sushi! Nowhere near Shota or the nice little sushi place in L.A. , but it's above average for a neighbourhood sushi joint. I had sushi while my gf had udon (as usual) and we took it back to my house to eat. After lunch we watched Henry & June, a movie based on the novel by Anais Nin. I worship Anais Nin, I really really do. She's an awesome writer, and not to mention the actress who played her in the movie, Maria de Medeiros, was so freaking gorgeous. She had this outer-worldly beauty, sort of like Gemma Ward, except Maria is a brunette.

Now I have to clean my room and wrap Xiu's present. I don't feel like cleaning my room, but it has to be done. I'm glad my room is relatively small compared to Xiu's. But again, her room is both her bedroom and study, and I have a separate study apart from my bedroom.

I gave my gf the scarf I knitted for her. The last time I knitted a scarf for her was back in ninth grade, and apparently that one is falling apart (due to my lackluster knitting skills) so I knitted her a nice, white wool scarf. It matched her outfit better than the Burberry scarf she was wearing today (this comment is biased, LOL).

Ok, no more ranting. Need to rinse out the dinner dishes and start cleaning my room!

Happy holidays everyone! Hope ya'll get lots and lots of expensive, materialistic presents!

I agree with you on the fugly Chinese beauty pageant contestants. It's a real disappointment, because there are so many gorgeous and smart girls to choose from; yet, the ones who do compete are so sub par. My mom has been talking about entering me in the Miss Chinese Cosmos pageant next year ever since they aired some special on tv. Yikes...

It's funny how kids will flaunt material items and act like they're the shit even though it's not their doing. Their parents are the ones paying for that shiny new Porsche. I like material things as much as the next brat, but that's just obnoxious.
